Was the Philadelphia Experiment just one of those events that never happened, or an elaborate government cover-up according to conspiracy theorists? The US Navy claims there was no such experiment.
About the Philadelphia Experiment
The Philadelphia Experiment was an alleged naval military experiment which took place sometime around October 28, 1943 at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, in Philadelphia, PA. The experiment supposedly rendered the USS Eldridge, a destroyer escort warship, invisible for a short period of time. Destroyer escorts were employed mainly for anti-submarine warfare.
Some proponents of the Philadelphia Experiment believe that the USS Eldridge actually teleported, 10 minutes back in time, to Norfolk Virginia before reappearing in Philadelphia. Norfolk is approximately 200 miles away from Philadelphia.
The Office of Naval Research contends that the legend got started based on the routine task of demagnetizing or "degaussing" the warships so as to be "invisible" to magnetic mines and torpedoes. The ships were still visible to the naked eye and radar.
Klingon Bird-of-Prey Warship
Hey, if the Klingons can cloak their birds-of-prey from Starfleet Command, why can't the US government make a simple destroyer disappear for a brief period time?
Take care,
